Sneezing your way to success

Allergy Cases flood hospitals Page 1A-Thursday by Megan Perry

The lede of this story fits the story really well but the headline in using the plural form of hospital is a bit misleading. The story is specifically about Hospital and them hiring a new nurse to handle allergy sufferers. The story itself is pretty well-written. The Kevin Bradley from Extension was a nice touch to bring in the scientific reasons for having so many allergy sufferers coming in to get help.

On another note, I would be interested to know if the Missourian has tried doing the new stories that appear on the 1a jump to the very back page of the section in order to be easier on readers. I was reading an article in AJR this week about the practice, and now I can’t find a link to the article in order to look into it anymore. I like the idea though and think that it would be a good reader service.

Cheap story leads cheap town

The ‘best bet for bargain beef’ was just uneccessary. I wouldn’t hold a local TV station to not airing a reader on the topic, complete with pictures of cows and teenagers bowling, but for the , it’s not needed. Man that last sentence was a long one! This story does not belong in a , especially on 1A. In regards to covering stories like these John Stossel said, “Give me a break.”

A Fair Story

The 1A feature on the documentary that will be shown next week in Jeferson City regarding the 1904 St. Louis World’s Fair was a very well written piece. The quotes were alright but the information and colorful prose by Whitney Juckno was enlightening and relly pulled me in to a story that if placed on 8A alone I would not have given a second thought. Through placement, photos and prose, this story is a winner.

Stumbling gas hoarders

http://columbiamissourian.com//story.php?ID=16230 yet another gas prices ‘ they are a risin’ ‘ story. This ones take the view of people stocking up before Rite. I presume this story was written yesterday sometime, I’m wondering why someone didn’t read the wire and include something about President Bush telling Americans to not drive so much (Yeah, like anyone will pay any attention to that). Yes printing schedules and all, but most major outlets this morning were reporting it, and the Jschool was out of Missourian copies by the time I made it to campus today so I can’t tell if there was a blurb about it or not. Other than that, not a bad story, Good idea for an with the station owner who ran out of gas too.

It takes two?

http://columbiamissourian.com//story.php?ID=16229 I suppose it is a standard crime beat story about a Columbia man swindling people out of money, the problem I suppose is the fact that he was dealing with large sums of money. Other than that, there isn’t really any here, and yet it is a two person by-line, Maybe someone got lazy and sent the other person to get the police reports? I feel like I wasted my time reading it.

Uncertainty shrouds Rita Coverage

(Columbia Missourian 1A Friday)- While his story was not very intriging the infograph and side bar information was much more helpful. My short attention span was fed well by the abundance of information on the front page today. One thing that this story had trouble with is maintainging a steady flow and concentrating on a certain topic. It seemed to jump around among topics and present way too many numbers for me to process at once.

Graphical Magnificence

Ok, so the whole dollar bill chopped up in pieces for the budget piece is a little cliche, everyone does the dollar bill chart, but it is an effective way to present budget information (Columbia Missourian, Tuesday 1A)

Finally, a little coverage`

Thank goodness, the story from last week about the little kid who was run over is finally getting some much needed reporting. http://columbiamissourian.com/ on the front page is the story about Patrick Knedler and also on 1A of the paper, this story didn’t get any justice last week and this is a much better attempt at an important story.

Emprint returns

I almost forgot to mention that the DigMo has a new look and I think that the designer who chose those colors for the map earlier this week must have chosen the new color scheme on the site too. I’m just not that into the baby blue color scheme they’ve got going on, the site does look more streamlined, but it also looks strikingly like a birth announcement site.

On another note, Emprint is back! After quite the hiatus it’s time to get rolling on the Fidler Experiment.

Pledging Education out the window

Thursday’s Missourian is chock full of stories relating to young people and education. Considering many in Columbia are deeply rooted in the Education field, I find it only fitting. The coverage of the Abortion bill is impressive, I’m glad we sent someone down the road to Jeff city to cover such an important story. Way to go Ashland for making 1A of the paper! I’m not quite sure how they did it, but it’s impressive none the less.
