Flue Vaccine makes front page amidst Hurricane

The Missourian (and several other major papers I might add) used impressive news judgement in including the FDA approval of a new flu vaccine front page coverage. While it is a welcome break to all of the coverage of the hurricane damage. It was essentially a wire story and I read the same piece from multiple outlets online today. It sounds more like a promotional piece for GlaxoSmithCline. This sort of thing I feel should be pretty transparent and may not have been front page material. As big a news event as last year’s shortage (well, it turned out to be not so much of a shortage afterall) was it doesn’t surprise me that many people might be concerned about the flue vaccines as it is almost that time of year again. My only problem is that the FDA vote delay article on 3A, while not spectacularly written is in my opinon more of a newsworthy piece as it deals full-on with the politics of getting drugs approved. The emergency contraceptive controversy, is a big controversy as it is, and with people resigning because of this political delay on the vote, well, I think that political squandering is more important than a press release by a drug company (although i’m sure the maker of the “morning after” pill drug was happy to contribute)
