The 1A article on the school district putting in artificial turf at high schools is important because in a time when state money is running thin, especially in regard to education putting in new turf at schools could have waited until funds were running more fully. One problem with the article is that it does not mention what kind of turf the CPS is planning on putting in, knowing a little about turf myself I would assume that they are putting in field turf, that wonderful plastic and rubber that looks just like real grass (such as was recently put in Faurot Field). This type of turf is very expensive and while I appload the strategic communication going on with the whole “we just want to let other groups use the fields like BAND and TRACK” a little more depth in reporting could have exposed the timing issue.
