The article about an elementary school student who was hit by a car got pushed to the back page of section A. This unfortunate story strikes close to home as I live off of gillespie Bridge road, not far from where the accident happened. The story itself is not too bad, Allison said about all that she could with a victim as young as he was.
This article comes as no surprise, each morning as I drive toward campus on Scott blvd I see minimum 10, and generally closer to 20 elementary aged kids standing in the street waiting for the bus. Rarely do I see a parent of other adult watching over the children who span both sides of the road. More than once I have seen kids jump into Scott Blvd and back out, or run across as seen in the picture. Scott blvd is a very dangerous road for vehicles, let alone small children. I think that Columbia Public Schools have a part in this problem as it appears that the reason why so many students stand at this corner is because the bus does not drive down their road and in the subdivision. this accident could have been avoided if the school district would have the bus even just turn the corner and not have the stop right there on Scott Blvd.
