Google Gadgets - Oh So Easy
August 31, 2007 by Jonathan · Leave a Comment
Google Gadgets are one of my favorite things right now, they provide a great deal of information at your finger-tips. In fact, I see and interact with Google Gadgets everytime I search on the Internet (I use Google almost exclusively).
.The gadgets are so easy to build, and the documentation so easy to understand that there shouldn’t be a news organization out there that isn’t taking advantage of the free traffic and views.
I actually created 3 Google Gadgets for KOMU.com in one overnight sitting. I’ll post again soon with links to those as soon as I finish cleaning them up a bit.In the meantime, go ahead and customize your own Google startpage, you’ll be glad you did.
And if you need a Google Gadget created… I’m your guy

WiMax is coming! (Thanks Sean Maloney)
August 29, 2007 by Jonathan · Leave a Comment
As the major telcos continue to complain about the cost of laying even more fiber under our streets and into our homes, Intel is betting that wireless is the way to go.WiMax is the next great wireless technology, it’s built similarly to cell-networks, it sits on towers, has a range of up to several miles, is high-speed, and doesn’t degrade when you have hundreds of people using it at the same time.
Some of the biggest players in electronics and the web are coming together on this one and they’re betting that consumers will come aboard soon.
There are a few hotspots if you will popping up in the major metropolitans and we should see hundreds more around the world within 2007 and 2008.
This is one emerging technology that we shouldn’t take lightly.

The Future Is Lifecasting
August 28, 2007 by Jonathan · Leave a Comment
Forget blogging, podcasting, and discussion boards! Lifecasting is the next big thing on the web. With the proliferation 3G cell networks, and ever increasing high-speed internet adoptions rates video is the name of the game.
If you don’t have video posted to the web yet, you better get started because your competition does! People are finally adopting video watching and downloading at alarming rates. If you can’t provide it for them, there are plenty of other sources who will.
Back to the topic of this post though: Lifecasting is the practice of videotaping the things you do everyday and posting them online in a sort of online version of your life. The hippest of internet users are actually streaming their lives LIVE on the web where hundreds of people at any given time watch intently to see what you will do next.Remember The Truman Show? This is very similar and it’s not just for the voyeurs anymore!
One of my personal favorite web people right now lifecasts: http://www.ijustine.tv Justine Ezarik is a Mac user, blogger, lifecaster, professional designer, and oh so much more!
You’ve probably seen her on the national TV networks talking about her first iPhone bill from AT&T (her iPhone bill was 300 pages long and came in a cardboard box!)At one point this past week there were over 400 people watching her live-stream online as she rode a mechanical bull and then ran through airport security (video camera on in her purse) and nearly missed her flight from LA to Denver.
Is Digg Alive?
August 27, 2007 by Jonathan · Leave a Comment
Digg, the veritable social-media powerhouse has been on the fritz lately. Webmasters and the general public have gotten bored, and while their traffic is still phenominal, the heart just isn’t there.
There are hundreds of “Digg Services” that provide webmasters with multiple Diggs in order to boost a site’s ranking on the site. While this is a less than savory way of achieving traffic, it still works.
Herein lies the current problem with Digg, it’s rife with get-rich-quick schemes, gambling, and more from the under-belly of the web.The creators aren’t happy about this and neither are the users.
Digg in my opinion is on it’s way out, there are too many social applications out there to limit your promotion and web time to a dinosaur in the web arena.
While the site does still have usage and support, it’s just not what it used to be.
Twitteriffic!

Twitter is a great little site that allows you to instantly update your friends and world with what you’re doing at any given time. There are numerous ways in which you can update including
Twitter is a social application that spawned from the usage of instant messages and setting ‘away messages’ on IM clients. It lets your friends know exactly what you’re doing at any given time. They recently (re)introduced search functionality into the site so that you can find other people in your area or with your interests to ‘follow’.Now Twitter isn’t just a killer social-media app, it’s also a great way for news organizations (and recently political candidates) to push short messages to viewers (and voters) Because of the multitude of ways users can interact with Twitter, it also makes it possible to reach users by all of those media. You can see me on twitter by going here: http://www.twitter.com/jdcoffman
Converging The News
August 24, 2007 by Jonathan · Leave a Comment
I’ve spent some time in the newsrooms of various media organizations and one common thing is that they’ve all acknowledged the web and it’s power.
In fact, during my time at a FOX affiliate this summer there were weekly conference calls between all the MyFox web managers and nearly daily updates to station management as well.
WDAF-TV in Kansas City has been the newsroom that was most receptive to new ideas and willing to take those ‘risks’ that are inherent when working with a ‘new’ media. They were open to new ideas and processes, and beyond that, openly asked for and received comments both good and bad internally and externally.
Not every newsroom is willing to make The Web such a large part of their operation but it sure was refreshing in the time I spent there to see management and staff supporting and giving their web site everything they could.
