My Ideal Job

by Jonathan Coffman on April 4, 2008

By way of looking introspectively at my self and my ambitions I have a pretty good idea of my ideal job is at this point. I’ve known for quite some time that being in the service of the public and working toward a greater good is in my blood. My mother was a teacher and my dad is a businessman. Between the two of them I acquired a passion for serving the public, and a business savvy entrepreneurial drive.

I’ve been on the path of working in the field of journalism for about 8 years now. Journalism attracted me in part because of the immense power of the press and how good journalism can be a cause for change. In addition, there are all kinds of cool toys that people in the news and information business can play with!

So that brings me to the ultimate point of this post, my ideal job:

  • Serves the public interest, educating and informing them.
  • Is collaborative with other smart people.
  • Allows for the intelligent expression and discussion of ideas and suggestions.
  • Brings people (both internally and externally) to have better, more efficient communication.
  • Allows people to discuss and achieve.
What all that means is that I have a passion for information and information delivery. I recognize the immense possibilies available today by use of technology.
The problem many news and information organizations have is that they’re unaware of how to best take advantage of all of those tools. That’s where I come in, I understand and use those tools already. I stay on top of the latest breakthroughs in information delivery and presentation and it’s more than just knowing and using the tools.
My ideal job would also come down to intelligently looking at potential solutions to problems of workflow internally and information delivery externally and evaluating the positive and negative aspects of individual technology tools.
I’m an achiever who knows how to lead, manage, and collaborate with individuals and groups to achieve a goal. I’ve often found myself in positions of problem-solving, for instance my Contributr application solves the problem of how to handle user generated content for information platforms. Contributr makes it easy for the public to submit text, images, and videos, then it makes it easy on the receiver to process and distribute that content to a larger audience.
I’ve actually been interviewing for the last two weeks for a job with an organization that fits all of those qualifications and fits my passions perfectly. Wish me luck as I continue the process with them!
