On Email Organization
April 22, 2008 by Jonathan · 1 Comment
For the last month or so I’ve been on a rampage, an email rampage. I haven’t quite hit Inbox Zero but inbox 30-40 suits me well actually. Here’s what I’ve done:
- I now have only 2 visible email addresses, Gmail and my @jonathancoffman.com mail. Those other addresses (.Mac, Yahoo!, Mizzou, and my secondary Gmail) all now get picked up by my primary Gmail account, this way I only have two inboxes to check, and hopefully by responding to those with only one address I gradually get fewer and fewer messages going to those other addys.
- Combining the last two addresses, my primary gmail and my domain email isn’t yet feasible. I can’t quite take myself down to that level yet. Because they’re used for two very different purposes (personal and professional) the use cases will remain mutually exclusive for the time being.
- The downside to still having two inboxes: two sets of gmail tags/folders. My domain email is handled by GoogleApps (which I love by the way), so for now I have two identical but disconnected sets of tags.

What Radio Stations Can Do NOW To Gain Listenership
March 21, 2008 by Jonathan · Leave a Comment
I’ll start by saying that radio is not my native tongue. I’ve done some editing and producing work for a local NPR affiliate but not much else. That doesn’t mean that my comments should be discounted, just that some of these may already be out there and I’m just not aware of it yet.
Here are some ideas on how radio can gain listenership NOW.
- Less crazy-talking DJs, more content (be it music, news, or other)
- More local and hyper-local content. Broadcast from places where your listeners are. It’s not that difficult to stream back to the station via microwave, satellite, or web. Join the rest of the world in the trenches.
- Stream your content on the web, all of it. I may be able to have headphones connected to my laptop at work easier than I can have a radio sitting on my desk.
- Indie Radio. Need I say more? No offense to Cumulus, etc, but geez, a little local ownership every once in a while never hurt anyone too badly.
- Discussion boards and blogs on your site, your listeners are likely all interested in some of the same things, so play to hose interests and let them talk amongst themselves. You may be surprised at how articulate they really are.
What ideas do YOU have? Share them in the comments.

- Good Morning Twitterville, it’s still raining here and it’s kinda depressing. #
- I really like the new Safari "Develop" menu for quick switching between user-agents, etc. #
- I am now Twittering using Ping.fm! #
- Hello World! This is my first post from Ping.fm, I’m testing out their service this morning. #
- Time for my post-lunch laptop battery recharge period… it’s also nice to turn up the screen brightness to high #
- @HighTechDad I like it, and I tend to think of "grid" as being a much better term than "cloud". Although I find myself using both. #
- Ping.fm is pretty neat, but can it beat "Moodlbast" which I’ve used for quite some time, watch for a blog post later
# - @HighTechDad Just a little, launched a couple servers, logged in, haven’t done any configuring or file loading yet. #
- Top News Headline of the day: "Ambulance Hits Heard Of Dear" - grammar errors theirs, I LOLd 4real on when it hit my feed reader. #
- Using the Reynold’s Institute’s money to register for NAB in Las Vegas in April, and I’ve got an interview setup in Las Vegas that same week #
- Just finished dinner, I’ve got some server migrations/upgrades/ordering to do tonight for Contributr #
The iPhone For Business
February 25, 2008 by Jonathan · Leave a Comment
I was speaking with a friend of my dad’s recently about the iPhone and it’s implications and usefulness on the enterprise level. I thought I’d share some of the ideas and thoughts I had about it in a quick post today.
- The lack of ‘push’ email is a limiting factor
- The 15 minute wait for new messages automatically is probably soon enough for most purposes, however I’ve found that the phone often doesn’t actually check that often unless you’re actively using the phone.
- Traditional business types don’t tether their cell phone anyway, sure road warriors and the like do, but everyday usage, probably not)
- Having mobile Safari is a very valuable tool not just for people like me, but the crackberry world as well.
- Security, these smart phones carry so much even with my limited data set I keep the phone on automatic password lock, and you should too.
- Until recently ATT didn’t offer enterprise plans for the iPhone, now they do, so what are you waiting for?
- Now that the bulk of the buzz about the iPhone has died down a little what’s left is still the best cellphone I’ve ever used, and I’ve used a LOT.
- For new and social media types like myself it’s powerful enough to tide me over for a weekend if I leave town and decide to leave my laptop at home (gasp!).
So there you have it, my latest thoughts on using iPhones in the business world.

Suggested schwag: triple-tap AC adapters
This came from Matt Cutts (the Google search team blogger), he suggests conferences replace all the tshirts, and other schwag with AC power strips, because we all know that there are never enough power outlets at technology conferences.
When I was at Adobe MAX this year I took a page from iJustine’s book and packed my own surge-protector, I, like iJustine, used it several times in session rooms and hallways where outlets were scarce and laptops were numerous.

Broadcom 3G ‘phone on a chip’ - Yay for Mobile!
October 15, 2007 by Jonathan · Leave a Comment
Broadcom introduces 3G on chip | Tech news blog - CNET News.com
Stories like this really get me excited, it’s amazing what technology can do for us and how we can use it in convergence and new-media operations. This phone-on-a-chip may just be the best thing since WiMAX died… imagine having one of these built into your new ultra-portable Apple laptop for Internet, anywhere. Now, I do love my AT&T Laptop Connect card, but I can’t afford it anymore, so it’s going back to the store… would I keep my contract if it was built into my laptop? Yeah I think I would, it’d be too easy to use, no more trying to figure out what wifi network I should be on, and why my cable connection isn’t working at home, I would be all Internet, all the time.
Of course the linked article mainly looks at this innovation as simply a way to shrink cellphones, but I don’t think people want even smaller phones, the rest of the phone experience has not caught on yet, and my iPhone is not the smallest phone I’ve had, but it does have the best user experience I’ve ever encountered in a cellphone.
