Blogging Break
November 19, 2007 by Jonathan · Leave a Comment
Posting will be slow this week as I travel around seeing family. I’m currently in Sedalia, MO enjoying the world-famous GuberBurgers (yes it’s a hamburger with melty peanut-butter on it!) and Tuesday I’ll be running some errands around here.
Then Wednesday it’s off to Denver, CO to meetup with some other family members. Unfortunately, I turned in my 3G AT&T card a couple of weeks ago, so posting and online business will have to wait while I search out various free wifi hotspots along the way.
In the meantime, I’m going to write up a couple quick posts of some neat things I’ve run into and tested in the last couple of weeks.
I really wish I had the time to sit down and write about all of the very cool new technologies and startups I’ve been in contact with lately. There are so many amazing things happening on the Internet right now, it’s just a LOT of fun.
Take care this week and have a good time with your friends and families! ![]()

Why I Don’t Use WordPress - Austin Heller’s Blog
Well, my blog runs WordPress, is that apparent? I’ve taken some time to customize my theme and make it blend peacefully with the rest of my site and I’m happy with it.
I was however just at the MovableType web site and their package is quite appealing, I think i’ll throw a copy up on my development server and see what happens, maybe someday you’ll refresh my blog page and notice that I’m using MovableType!

Dotspotter Purchased By CBS For $10 Million
This happened about a week ago, but it’s still relevant because it’s still overpriced. I guess I need some friends at CBS because I’ve got several million dollar ideas, and if they’re offering $10 million, well I’d have it made.
My problem is this, the webiverse is very much about setting standards right now, and if $10 million is the base price for a new social-media website now, well frankly that’s absurd. The concept behind Dotspotter is very simple, it’s basically a DIGG for celebrity gossip. I’m not all that impressed.
CBS, what were you thinking?

Astroturfing on the Dark Side of the Moon » The Buzz Bin
Alright, so this blog post from the Buzz Bin is slightly less timely than the others I typically blog about, but I found it interesting none the less. Of course any chance you get to expand your net vernacular is a good thing right?
There certainly is a lot of astroturfing out there in the blogosphere and I see this trend expanding greatly in the short-term. All of the wonderful bloggers out there need to embrace ethical writing and promotional techniques. I think the name of the game is transparency here, if you’re not being transparent, then get out!
This holds true in so many aspects of online publishing and I’ll be the first one to admit that I occasionally use my blog to promote myself and my products, but I try to do so in such a way that it’s not deceitful or misleading.
Nielsen - Word-of-Mouth the Most Powerful Selling Tool

Nielsen - Press Release: Word-of-Mouth the Most Powerful Selling Tool: Nielsen Global Survey
Everything I’ve been working on in the past 4 years isn’t all for naught! Neilsen released this study a couple days ago and it’s extremely interesting. I highly recommend you check it out. Essentially they’ve taken real life data and figured out that word-of-mouth is the most powerful recommendation engine… which is wonderful because with all the social-media applications we’re building… that’s a form of word-of-mouth.
In fact, my word of mouth has a much longer reach now than it ever has before! My blog has the potential to reach millions of people in a few instances by way of the various places where it gets posted and syndicated. This is truly amazing.
Something else that makes me very happy is that these social and new-media applications appear to be gaining strength in credibility which makes all of this work that so many people are doing even more credible and important.
I’m very interested in seeing more data and research done on this type of subject, if you know of anything PLEASE send me an email of post a comment!
Social Media Strategy, What’s Yours?
October 11, 2007 by Jonathan · Leave a Comment
One of my favorite things right now is social-media strategy and figuring out how and what is going to make people take actions in response to a social-media application or device. It’s something that has interested me for a while now, and honestly, I probably should spend less time thinking about it, and more time acting on it and of course finishing all of my other projects!
I would like to encourage you to take a look at this link from Chris Brogan’s blog, he’s typically quite insightful when it comes to new-media and cool-things-on-the-web. His social media strategy is that of branding himself as a thought-leader more than likely in order to advance his career options. I also think he has some fun with it too!
If that’s not his strategy, well I just gave you mine then. I use social media all the time, I create new avenues for social-media, I use social-media, why else do you get over 1,000 results when you Google my public Internet Identity? (no, not all of the 1300ish results are me, but pretty close to it!)
Live Blogging this week!

I’m currently sitting in the St. Louis International Airport waiting on my flight to Chicago. I’ll be attending the Adobe MAX 2007 Conference Monday through Wednesday (Yes it’s Saturday, I’m going to pre-event training Sunday). Throughout the week I’ll be blogging live right here about the cool people, tools, and session that I meet and attend. Be sure to add my feed to your RSS reader to get up to the minute details.I’ll also be Twittering like a crazy person (thanks @PocketTweets for iPhone!) so be sure to check out my Twitter timeline. As if my blog and Twitter weren’t enough, I’ll also be Lifecasting through justin.tv whenever possible. I’ve got a 3G Cingular Laptop Connect card for my powerbook on this trip, so I should have high speed web access whenever, wherever. You can watch me live in my hotel suite, at the Adobe MAX conference, and meeting with web 2.0 startups about jobs LIVE by visiting: NEWSolutions.tv Lifecast.
Switching Server Control Panels
September 24, 2007 by Jonathan · Leave a Comment
Yuck! That’s probably the best and most non-profain way of explaining what this is. Server migrations are never easy and are always more complex than you plan on. I still have one server that runs Plesk (which is fine, but not as easy to run as cPanel), and I would love to be able to get it switched over to using cPanel.
Unfortunately, the two server GUIs are nearly mutually exclusive. Neither particularly likes the other and it shows! Oh how I wish they would talk or at least provide some method of switching, if any of my readers know a guy who can do this kind of migration be sure to let me know.
That’s all for today, I’ll be posting some more information from the Poynter Series again soon so look forward to that.
Lifecasting and The Potential for News Streaming

I’ve been dealing with and investigating a lot of Lifecasting services recently and I managed to get my hands on a Justin.tv beta code. Justin.tv is in my opinion the best live-streaming and lifecasting startup out there right now.
I’m going to embed my live channel below right now, so you have a link, but I will be doing a more detailed followup very soon.
Coda - Holy Coderz PHP Man!
September 12, 2007 by Jonathan · Leave a Comment
Coda is a new application from Panic (the fabulous people behind such Mac OSX programs like Transmit, the best FTP app out there!).I first heard about Coda from Mike Chambers one of the people behind and in front of Adobe AIR in the Adobe Labs. He highly recommends Coda, and he doesn’t recommend very many apps. Neither do I for that matter, I happily use my education discount whenever I can but rarely do I invest in commercial software unless key technology players endorse it.This seems slightly counter-intuitive to my gadget and web nerd persona, but alas budgetary constraints keep my software library slim. Coda however, has just been moved to the top of my wishlist.I’m a huge fan of Transmit, it does everything a web developer needs in terms of FTP access. I manage a large number of web sites and Transmit handles all of my transfer needs with ease. I have a feeling that Coda follows closely in Transmit’s footsteps.Apparently, Coda is a dream come true, it offers CSS stylesheet design, code color-coding, troubleshooting and bugfinding, FTP services, and oh so much more.If there is a kind reader out there I’d love to get my hands on Coda, and if you have the means, I’d surely appreciate a donation to cover the cost!
