Microblogging: ‘the gateway drug to social media’ by The Bryper Blog
Alright, I admit, I’m addicted to blogging. I’m currently on a quest to blog 365 days straight, now not all of those posts will be here, on my personal blog, but across the web on the multiple sites that I contribute to.
The thing is, part what I love about blogging is getting other people to blog as well. Bryan Person hit the nail on the head in this recent post where he equates microblogging (a la Twitter) as the gateway drug to social media.
And he’s right, it is much easier to Tweet and Pownce, and Jaiku your way into blogging. Now if only we could figure out a good way to ‘explain Twitter to me’ to all those out there who haven’t tried it yet… hmmm… another blog post tomorrow?

remarkable communication: The Ten Commandments of New Social Media
I highly suggest you take a look at this recent post over at Remarkable Communication. He outlines ten very useful commandments for participating in social media.
His commandments:
- Participate in the coversation
- Do Not Lie
- Do Not Astroturf
- Talk like a human being
- Remember the community
- Don’t be a wimp
- Do not Snivel
- Write what is worth reading
- Don’t talk about what you don’t know
- Have a sense of humor
Wow, that’s quite a list and I tend to agree with each and every one of them. In fact, it reads almost like the text from Principals of American Journalism back in my early years at the Journalism School.
Those commandments of social media sound just like what it takes to be an honest, fair, and tought Journalist (just like in Jschool, that’s Journalist with a big J to support Big J journalism. Does that make sense to anyone who hasn’t gone to Journalism School?).
The only thing I might question would be astroturfing, not that I support it, it’s a ridiculous practice, but do people still participate a lot?

Elements of a Personal Brand : [chrisbrogan.com]
I know I’ve recommended you read Chris Brogan’s blog before, but he posted a very interesting and useful article about personal branding and making sure that you are taking advantage of every opportunity to brand yourself for your career.
Chris is a great guy, and I enjoy being social-network friends with him (we haven’t met in person yet, but I’m eyeing some conferences that he’s attending in the near future).
If you haven’t already, I’d suggest subscribing to his RSS feed, his posts are usually very useful and action oriented. If nothing else, he inspires me.

Bytes of Standards seems to be an abandoned blog but man I like the WordPress theme and the customizable options available. Being able to change the colors, and the css stylesheet is very cool!

A few days ago I shared a link with you regarding mobile spam, and also one about the credibility of word-of-mouth recommendations. This short posts highlights how word-of-mouth spread and reach has created a new genre of online activism.
Church of the Customer is a good blog anyway, so you should add it to your RSS reader and give it a read every once in a while.
New Media Mind - A New Blog 4u

Sharing my new media thoughts to the world. — New Media Mind
I’m sharing this new and exciting blog with you today because it’s worth it. The author of New Media Mind is Jen Reeves, my boss at KOMU, and friend. We’ve worked together for 3 or 4 years now on various projects and we’ve accomplished a lot! Not nearly enough, but we’ve done a lot.
I first met and started working with her as she launched the new komu.com 3 years ago, I wasn’t involved in the planning, but I was one of the original content generators and editors for her. Since then, I’ve posted, edited, written, or had my hand in over 1,400 stories on komu.com and it grows each week. It’s truly been an amazing experience working on such a project.
Unfortunately we have a list a mile-long of tools and technology that we’d like to introduce but there is currently a spending freeze on this fabulous site… Which honestly, is quite a backwards view of the web and journalism in this day and age. The web is such a powerful and important tool it’s a shame that it’s being neglected in such a manner.
All that to say, Jen is fabulous and you should check out her emerging blog.

The Impact of the “In Crowd” » The Buzz Bin
The Buzz bin has some very intellectual and insightful thoughts on the impact of the social-media and the ‘in-crowd’ in our social lives. The basic premise of the post is that those of us evanglizing and taking advantage of the social-media tools out there are ground-breaking and pioneers in this new online gold-rush.
I’ve been hearing more and more lately about the next web bubble, and I tend to believe it too, I think we’re getting very close to breaking through into commonness and the masses. The number of genius creative types who are working nonstop on making engaging and useful User Experiences on the web is amazing. I was very fortunate to be able to meet many of those people at Adobe MAX last week and I continue to be amazed each day when I sit down at the computer for my ‘research’ time in finding new and exciting uses of and for the Internet.
The social-media bubble is about to explode, and in a good way. While I hope it’s not Facebook that captures the market, I do hope that it happens, and I’m confident that it will. There are too many very strong forces and movements in online development and rich internet applications not to have it become accessible to everyone.
Indeed, the Contributr project that I’m working on right now is aiming at a very high goal, to further minimize the barriers to entry that the public has in creating and sharing their own ‘news‘. More on this later, but until then, enjoy your day!
