Lessons In Social Media
June 22, 2008 by Jonathan · 1 Comment
Social media doesn’t have to be intimidating, in fact it’s very easy to get started and build a base of information and conversation upon which to learn and grow. As an active participant, researcher, and social-media based employee, I use social media for both my personal life and professional growth.
There are numerous opportunities to get out there and explore, by reading through these basic lessons and tip sheets I hope you can take better advantage of the soon to be ubiquitous social side of the Internet.
I wrote these tip sheets and information pages as one of my final projects at the Missouri School of Journalism in the spring of 2008. They are written toward an audience who may have heard about social-media but isn’t sure how to get started.
There will be follow up and additional information added to this resource as I have time to expand the series. If you have any questions please contact me. And as always, comments are open, leave your thoughts, edits, and changes below.

Web Design and Buildouts
January 23, 2008 by Jonathan · Leave a Comment
As a web designer I have a small bit of experience ranging from e-commerce and mail-order companies, to micro-sites advertising goods and services, to blogs, discussion boards, and a philanthropic site. I’ve built a wide variety.
I’m passionate about online communities, and in order to positively affect change you have to remember who you ultimately are serving, the almighty user. Enhancing user experience is vital to any project whether offline or online.
You’ll find links below to some of the sites I’ve designed and built over the years. The methods and the technology has changed, and so have I. Design and development went from largely Photoshop comps hard coded into HTML sites to standards based XHTML, Flash, and Content Management Systems.
All of my projects strive to be standards compliant and I especially enjoy working with people who believe in open source software (Drupal and WordPress are my favorites) the benefits to both the developers and the users when taking advantage of open code.
News and Journalism based sites:
- Smart Decision 2008
- KOMU Blogs and Boards (online community, still in development)
- KOMU News Base (online training and tutorial site for newsroom employees)
- Kansas City Pets (WDAF-TV micro site)
Personal and Professional Sites (many of these sites are simply archived copies, some links may not work on them):
- Creative Celebrations (2002)
- FunFunFun For Kids
- CB Designs
- Family Guy Quotes
- How You Can Volunteer

Adobe MAX Introduction
September 30, 2007 by Jonathan · Leave a Comment
I’m at the Adobe developers convention all week, and despite some minor technical difficulties this morning (forgot to charge my lifecasting battery) I’m at the conference end enjoying the people and sessions.
All day today I’m in a session called Unlocking Cross-Media Workflows, it’s a topic that is vitally important to many of the projects that I find myself being affiliated with everyday. Questions of workflows and efficiency count in the new-business and this session has already been a help.
Who knew thatjust by using Fireworks, you can get the same ‘Photoshop” save to web quality, but at half the file-size? The team-leader in this session is a former Macromedia guy, so some things are definitely tilted that direction., but overall it’s very useful.
I will be publishing notes and information both on this blog and a soon-to-be launched Google Docs platform for use by clients and peers.
I’m currently sitting next to a guy from the company that brought us the marvelous software Camtasia, I’ve been sharing our usage patterns, and am excited that we may be able to integrate their great software closer into our workflow, and not just for the training purposes we’re currently using it for.
I’ll post again during lunch more than likely, my battery is quite low at the moment.
Live Blogging this week!

I’m currently sitting in the St. Louis International Airport waiting on my flight to Chicago. I’ll be attending the Adobe MAX 2007 Conference Monday through Wednesday (Yes it’s Saturday, I’m going to pre-event training Sunday). Throughout the week I’ll be blogging live right here about the cool people, tools, and session that I meet and attend. Be sure to add my feed to your RSS reader to get up to the minute details.I’ll also be Twittering like a crazy person (thanks @PocketTweets for iPhone!) so be sure to check out my Twitter timeline. As if my blog and Twitter weren’t enough, I’ll also be Lifecasting through justin.tv whenever possible. I’ve got a 3G Cingular Laptop Connect card for my powerbook on this trip, so I should have high speed web access whenever, wherever. You can watch me live in my hotel suite, at the Adobe MAX conference, and meeting with web 2.0 startups about jobs LIVE by visiting: NEWSolutions.tv Lifecast.

A Quick KOMU Update
September 7, 2007 by Jonathan · Leave a Comment
I continue to work regularly both on the clock and freelance for KOMU-TV in Columbia, MO. My duties include writing and editing stories (in fact I’ve written or edited over 1150 stories in the three years I’ve been here!) as well as develop and implement special projects.
Some of the recent projects that I’ve completed include (but not all get adopted for public usage):
- Internal blog system for reporter and producer notes on stories
- Internal training manual system based online using the Drupal CMS
- External blog and discussion board system using the Drupal CMS
- Several Google Gadgets featuring news, sports, and weather information for customer’s Google Custom Homepage.
- A Facebook application that pushes news content into the profiles of users
I’ve got a lot more ideas and projects on the table, unfortunately the funding and support has dried up for many of these projects, however I do hope to include many more details on my web site in the coming weeks as I build out additional pages.
